Google truncates by pixel width, not character count, so length limits are approximate. Titles over ~600px and descriptions over ~920px (desktop) usually get cut with an ellipsis.
What the SERP Preview tool does
This tool renders how your page is likely to appear in Google search results, using the same pixel-width limits Google uses to truncate titles and meta descriptions. Type a title and description and you'll see a live desktop and mobile snippet, plus whether each element fits before it gets cut off.
When to use it
- While writing title tags and meta descriptions, to keep them within the visible range.
- To check that your most important keywords and brand name aren't truncated.
- To preview how a snippet reads to a searcher before you publish.
Why pixel width, not character count
Google truncates titles and descriptions by pixel width, not characters, so a title full of wide letters can be cut sooner than a longer one with narrow letters. Previewing the rendered snippet is the only reliable way to see what searchers will actually read.
